He reads....

It's amazing! And he isn't even 5 yet. I know I'm likely to be somewhat biased about my firstborn's intelligence, but I truly am astounded by how easily Patrick has taken to reading. Without a doubt the major credit for this must go to his absolutely fantastic teacher, who has made his whole first year of school the most positive and fun experience we could possibly have hoped for. Every teacher for the rest of his life is going to be a disappointment to him after Mrs Stephens! We love her (ok, we love her anyway since she's a friend of ours, but that's completely beside the point!) and I want to be in her class!

And it isn't just books he's reading - it's everything made of letters. The most common questions from him at the moment are "What does r-o-u-n-d spell?" (or whatever letter sequence he's come across) and "Does that say Spar?" (or whatever word he has spied). And just how happy was I when Michael's mum gave us all Michael's old Ladybird and Mr Men books for his bookcase? Pretty darn happy, I can tell you. They are so amazing, these old books that smell musty and bring back so many memories for both me and Michael of how we read them when we were kids, and which ones were our favourites ('The Magic Porridge Pot' and 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' were my personal favourites!) And it makes my heart literally sing to watch Patrick do his best to read one of them. He tries so hard, bless him. Admittedly, the combination of budding reader and stubborn 'I will do it myself' temperament is making the bedtime story a lot longer than normal and a little trying at times, but who could bring themselves to squash such eagerness?

Reading

Inspired by the reading bug and my reading of Soule Mama's book, I decided to spread the books out around the house a bit and created a reading 'nook' on the landing under the stairs to our bedroom. I've been wanting to use this space better for a while. It usually ends up housing things that should be somewhere else or baskets of unsorted laundry. So I am delighted to give it a proper purpose. I just shoved the beanbag from the lounge in there with a basket of books and a little book trough that I had brought from school a few years ago. I was secretly hoping that it might encourage the boys to lift a book more readily. And look what happened.

Can you hear the song my heart is singing now?!

Thinking

There clearly hasn't been much in the way of blogging over here at the moment, and I know it's becoming long overdue when Michael comments on the same old entry popping up as his homepage everyday. But that's not to say there hasn't been a lot going on in our lives. Au contraire, in fact. I think the easiest way to get caught up is a list - I haven't had a good list going on for ages!

1. School has been fairly frantic in the run up to coursework deadlines - lots of rushing around with pieces of important paper in hand, lots of faffing about, filling out paperwork, panicking about pupils who still have a few things to do, lots of phonecalls and texts to my jobshare partner since we only actually see each other on Wednesdays. No real need to elaborate I don't think! Hoping that when I go in tomorrow it's all done and dusted!

2. There has been much sorting around the house and in the garage. When we moved we left lots of boxes for a car boot sale in the garage along with some things that had nowhere to go as our roofspace is converted into our bedroom. So we finally got stuck in and admitted that we were never going to want to get up early enough to do a car boot sale, dumped a lot of stuff, gave some to charity and finally moved the rest into the small space that is indeed our roofspace. This all culminated with the long term donation of my parents' treadmill which now has pride of place in Boydo's Gym! I will likely never use it, but Michael has been dedicated in his treading this past week or so.

3. Despite not using the treadmill, I have amazed myself and many others in my committment to run the streets of Ballyholme twice a week! I admit, I am often spurred on by my competitive spirit (it only comes out occasionally, but it's fair to say I don't like to be beaten!) wanting to keep up with my running chum, Debbie, who I suspect could run much further than me but hasn't let on yet! Time will tell. I can proudly tell you that I am able to run 2 1/2 miles with no walking in the cracking time of 28 mins! I know, marathon teams around the country are probably going to be head hunting me any day now! But I am proud of myself because I generally don't like doing it, but my calves are definitely wobbling less!

4. There's been more sickness. I'm fully expecting a visit from the Education Welfare Officer for the amount of absence poor Patrick has had in P1. This past week was the dreaded ear infection. Obviously, in true motherly fashion, I presumed he just had a cold, dosed him regularly with Calpol and Nurofen and ignored his complaints of a popping and sore ear. Bad mummy! Until he was howling in agony last Sunday and the out of hours surgery asked me to take him over. Ahem! I did feel very bad about the whole thing, given that I had for a few days thought that his tonsils had a rather golf ball-like appearance. Thankfully the kindly doctor gave us an antibiotic straightaway, and so we bribed him with Haribo to take the yucky yellow Amoxicillan once again. He made it back to school in good time for the Snow White party on Friday, which he attended as a dwarf, dressed in jogging bottoms a Santa hat and my $100 Abercrombie and Fitch jacket! He spied that the day before, tried it on and before I could say "Not on your life are you wearing that!" he excitedly proclaimed that it was the perfect dwarf jacket! Having been such a bad mummy earlier in the week I had no option but to say ok, sneakily check that it was machine washable and beg his teacher not to let him paint in it! And all was well.

5. I finally got round to scanning the layouts I did at our little Crop circle over Easter with Sheila, Jo and Lesley. Voila!

Who_called_a_superhero_2

Loving both of these but especially the superhero one. It is just so typical of Patrick right now.

6. I have been trying to be super organised for Patrick's birthday party which is next Saturday. There is potential for a bit of a rant here but I shall try to hold myself back. In a nutshell, birthday parties are one part of my own childhood that I can recall clearly and very happily. They were simple, a few friends, a bit of pass the parcel, some dancing and the cake that we got to choose from mum's special cake recipe book. I remember that bit so clearly, down to some of the actual cakes I had for my parties. Now, though, I suspect as a product of our hectic lives and lack of time, all the parties Patrick goes to are in play centres or other places where entertainment is laid on and food is provided. And they are good parties. Patrick always wants to have his party wherever the last one he went to was! But I am holding out for as long as possible (probably until no one wants to come to his parties because his mum is a weirdo and pass the parcel is for babies!) So our party is at Crawfordsburn Country Park. A bit of a gamble with our weather, I know, and all prayers for sun will be much appreciated as the contingency plan is our lounge! But Patrick is excited about it and that's what counts! And I'm paving the way for Debbie to follow suit - which she better or there'll be words! So I've been planning games, cakes (caved in a bit here and am going for the Dr Who cake, but promise to make one myself for his actual birthday the week after!) and making invitations. Behold, the final result - a combination of Patrick's drawing, some googling of the Dr Who logo and my photoshop skills.

Patricks_invitation_2

I am pretty darn pleased with it if I do say so myself! Is it wrong of me to be disappointed that mums have not been flocking to me in the playground to congratulate me on such a piece of workmanship? I could have a whole other rant about the complete minefield party invitations are too, but I shall save you from that.

7. I have also read from cover to cover Soule Mama's book, The Creative Family. It rocks. Seriously. It's had me doing most of the thinking referred to in the title of this post. Which I fully intended to write more about tonight, but may put off until tomorrow (the word 'tomorrow' used loosely here I think you'll find.) I am buzzing with ideas for things I want to try with the kids, for myself and for us all. I suspect I may have to sneak some of it past Michael without him noticing, but he'll thank me for it later. Never mind the shocking amount of time I've spent trawling through the archives on her blog and googling fancy Japanese import fabric! I seriously do have a lot of thoughts about the ideas in her book and a whole lot else that it has brought to my mind, but I think it needs a post of its own.

8. Michael went back to work this past week as well, after the operation on his back at Easter. A bit of a shock to his system I think, but he seems to be coping! We'll see how he fares with 4 nights in a row this week. Feel pretty sorry for him on that one!

And that about wraps this post up. Well done if you've stuck it out to the end! I didn't intend for it to be so long but I suppose that's what I get for neglecting the little world of blog for so long. I must go and prepare myself for the next few days of school - usually done by drinking a glass of wine and watching something mindless to help me pretend work doesn't really exist. And a fairly successful method most weeks! I hope to be back soon, but as ever, who can tell? I'll post sooner if Julie Warke leaves a comment!!

Comedy with Conor

Our little 2 year old has recently developed a rather droll sense of humour. I am shocked at his ability to deliberately do or say something silly, especially when mummy is trying very hard to be cross with him for whatever mischief he has been up to. Take teatime just a few days ago. There we were, all very civilised (for once) eating happily and chatting about our day, when out of the blue Conor said 'Shut up'! This isn't new to us, although we're still trying to work out where it came from. Nanny was the first recipient of this sentiment rather unfortunately, but I'm led to believe it hasn't irreparably damaged their relationship! Anyway, after this little outburst at the table I told him that was very rude and bold and that he should not say it again. Patrick was completely horrified with him - he always is when he hears this anywhere. He appears to have a heightened sense of morally acceptable or unnaceptable behaviour! I asked Conor what should he say, and in his best silly voice complete with funny eyes he said "thowwee" and proceeded to howl with laughter at his own hilarity and comedy genius. Michael nearly choked on his mouthful of chicken korma and as I tried to retain a modicum of serious mummy, I had to resort to laughing into my glass of cordial! Shocking behaviour from one so young, and I can only imagine how this is going to progress as he gets older. I fear I will never be able to stay cross with him at all.

In other news, last Friday as I was assisting Patrick with a few things before BB display number 2 (you may well ask!) it did occur to me that Conor was rather quiet. I'd brought him upstairs to get his jammies on so that I could get him down for 7 and have a pleasant hour to myself before Michael and Patrick came home again. After sending Patrick off to the display I ventured into Conor's room to see what he was up to. Did I expect to see him entirely covered in Sudocreme? Not even slightly! Did I expect to see that he had also, rather proudly I may add,  covered Lightning McQueen on his brand new, never been slept in duvet cover in Sudocreme? Surely not! He was as pleased as punch with himself that he had covered only 'Ligh Gigeen' and not 'Saahy'! What could I do?! My first instinct was to yell a bit about my wasted hour, but I opted for quietly removing him from the crime scene and launching him in the bath to begin the de-creming. It's oil-based, you know, just in case you find yourself in a similar predicament at any time! (Sheila - I fear that this is something Conor may try to telepathically communicate to Cameron!) Kids, eh!

Right, now that I've shared my amusing stories, I'm off to bed with my poorly limbs. It will no doubt amuse some that I've begun running - 4 times in 2 weeks and getting better each time. After 2 years of waiting for my pre-children body to return to me overnight, it seems I will have to take drastic action and exercise. Not for the faint hearted I can tell you, but tonight I think I found my stride (or some other technical term I'm unaware of). So I shall post just one image from a recent session. I may return over the weekend, or I may not - it's a mystery to us all. Have a great weekend x

And seem to be ending like this

The dummy is clearly not mine, but the wine and Smarties definitely are! I'm wondering if there's a direct link between alcohol abuse and school holidays.....

Had a couple of good photo shoots lately so am just posting a sneaky few. Can't say who they're for but doing these was such fun. I think these girls would have me round every day to take their picture!

More to come but must go and print photos for scrap-a-thon at Sheila's tonight:) Hope you're having a lovely Easter x

He was so cute

Saturday was Patrick's BB display, the first of many, no doubt. This was a major deal for us because for a few months during the year he didn't want to go and we went through phases of arguing with him, ignoring him, bribing him and finally giving in and not sending him. Not that he actually hated it - he loved it when he went, but he had been sick for a few weeks and couldn't go and then he just got out of the routine. And you know how important routine is! So to finally get to the display was nothing short of miraculous.

The brief snippets of chat that we got out of Patrick along with the plethora of notes from the leaders led us to believe that he was going to need to dress up as a band member (a pop band, not an Orange one!) Someone from Westlife, to be precise! So you can imagine our excitement about cool jeans and a new t-shirt along with his new jacket and Ninja Turtle shades (I may e-mail a suggestion to Westlife that they change from Ray Ban or whatever to the Woolies' range of kids' shades - tres cool indeed!) The cool costume was also to be accompanied by a dressing gown, tea towel and tie for the bible story - no idea what that was going to be about at all!

Off we trundled with his Spiderman case laden with the required items, deposited him at his table with his leader and headed into the hall to grab our vantage point. It's a pretty big hall for little boys but all the seats were filled with eager parents, siblings and grandparents, just waiting for their little ones to make their big appearance. It would have to be said that Patrick's appearance wasn't really 'big' - it was more of a realisation as all the boys came in in their uniforms that the massive jumper moving on its own with a tiny tennis ball-like head was actually Patrick! He and his little chum looked so tiny among the bigger boys. It's only when you see them in the context of actual bigger boys that you realise they are really still only tiny. So often I think Patrick is older than he is and set my expectations too high, and on Saturday I was reminded that he's not even 5 yet. Still very wee!

Anyway, the night consisted of lots of relay races, lots of singing, some silly games and a fantastic rendition of 'Music Man' complete with actions galore! Patrick was having such a great time and it was so lovely to see him part of something else, doing his thing and being himself. The leaders there are great, and even the ones who had no chance of winning a cup, ie Patrick, got a prize for attending. He was so chuffed at 'winning' his football he even took it to bed with him! Needless to say I took a ton of pictures - all a bit blurry, but you get the idea.

Running in the relay races

Doing the bagpipe bit of 'Music Man'. Seriously, he was the most co-ordinated boy on the floor! And I'm not just saying that - independent onlookers made similar comments! And are you checking the shadesand new t-shirt?

Img_7524_copy

Doing the aeroplane bit of 'Music Man'. Who knew that the Dambusters music was part of that song?!

Img_7530_copy

And the biblical dressing gown/tea towel combination. Turns out it was the story of Joseph and Patrick was one of the mean 11 brothers. And they sang 'Any Dream Will Do'. Must crack out the soundtrack one of these days and see if we can usurp Charlie and Lola's reign in the car!

Looking forward to further blogging over the Easter holidays which start at 3pm tomorrow, hurrah!

Best & worst

I've been thinking a LOT lately about being a mum - the good bits and the bad bits. It's been fairly up and down at Casa Boyd this past week or so and at this point I feel pretty drained. Lots of sleep deprivation thanks to a Conor cold and then just Conor being Conor! Patrick is exhausted with BB activities, school and a weekday birthday party (after a school outing to a farm for added tiredness!) and tiredness+Patrick+mummy=no one very happy:( The past couple of mornings have been pretty traumatic leaving him to school, just a special treat for me I suppose! So there was nothing else for it but to do a layout. I'd been checking out Jamie Waters' blog just before I did it and it's pretty obvious! Not my usual linear style and more patterned paper than I can usually cope with but it's my favourite layout of the year.

Best_and_worst_3

I also managed to complete Ali Edward's weekend creative challenge this week too - shocker, I know! I decided on Mother's Day that I wanted a photo of all 4 of us, one of me and the boys and one of Michael and the boys. I got the first! But I was pretty chuffed to get any given how long it took to set up and get the timer on the camera working! It's a very different layout to the one above and I'm not sure how 'me' it feels. Struggling with the lack of colour, but I think I like it. If nothing else, at least my grandchildren will see how we looked as a family!

Family

In other news:

Michael arranged for a decorater to come and do the front room (painting as I type) despite having no colours picked. Now we have two whole rooms of stuff lying in the hall, landing, kitchen etc. If health and safety call we're stuffed!

Patrick has his first BB display on Saturday night. Not overly excited about the 7.30 start since he's usually in bed by then, but super excited to see him do his thing! Will obviously post photos later.

I went to see Westlife in the Odyssey with mum and Lesley last week. I couldn't claim to be their biggest fan - don't even own one of their cds, but there's no denying everyone loves a bit of Westlife! It was a really good show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And some of those boys are just too good looking for their own good!

And now I'm going to close my eyes for 20 minutes before collecting Patrick from school. I can only hope he's happier than when I left him this morning!

Playing

Me. Not the boys!

I've been having a bit of fun playing recently. I've completed some more layouts (new scanner not making me happy yet) and spent shocking amounts of time on flickr just checking out some of the images that have been uploaded there. You could seriously lose massive chunks of your life just trawling through there. Such good fun. Amazing inspiration. And as ever, inspired by Ali Edwards to create a mosaic with some of the images that have really caught my eye. I'm pretty sure I should mention who took these photos to avoid copyright issues (like any of them will ever be over here!) Top to bottom, left to right they are:

1. it rained, by teddy;   2. 37 / 52 value your time, by teddy;  3. daughter in the sun by she saw things;   4.Hello kitty by ya7obeelk   5. 02.08 Elena 244urban by emiliekarun    6. bridal shoes by gwynethcolleen  7. usage by moS 8. by rottnapple   9. Valentina Del Carmen bynRiot !

Mosaic8853571_2

Just looking at this makes me a) want to take some pictures and b) feel pretty cool! Not as cool as I felt earlier when I saw that Ali Edwards had also commented on a photo of mine on flickr! Was positively giddy for the rest of the evening, with not a drop of wine in sight I may add!

Making me happy

I realise it's been over a week since I last posted but the new simpler me isn't worried about that. Instead I am inspired by soule mama to list 10 things that are making me happy right now.

1. This week was a short one at school. Always good to look on the bright side of the negatives!

2. Patrick's room, the one that will have bunk beds for sharing (!), has been painted and is having carpet fitted on Monday.

3. Ikea is really close to our house!

4. Michael has no idea that I have a stack of stuff from aforementioned Ikea that I intend to drill holes for tomorrow while he is at work haha! (Working on the principle that it's better to show him what I mean than tell him so he can disgree with me. This way he will have to fill holes if he disagrees with me!)

5. Watching Transformers today after Patrick got home from school with a sneaky packet of Smarties each. The list of things Michael knows nothing about is getting longer!

6 This collage I made for Michael following the weekend creative prompt from Ali Edwards.

Img_6798

7. The tv show 'Extras'. Just started watching it with Michael and laughed so hard at things that really aren't funny at all!

8. How great Conor's chat is now. Still hard to make him out sometimes but oh so cute!

9. I have completed 2 more scrapbook pages this week. New scanner being installed tomorrow so you will have to wait to see them.

10. This photo of my friends J & A with the delightful baby C:)

And to top it all, sickness has left the building. Thank you, and goodnight x

Recovering

We just don't seem to be able to shake illness this winter. Shunning the germs was part of the simplify plan, but it seems the germs don't care! So the simplest thing to do was just to lie low and get through it. Patrick has had a cold/cough/tummy bug and missed nearly a week of school. I've had a bit of the bug and missed 2 days of work (boo hoo!!). And Michael was hurt at work and has been off for a couple of weeks. Talk about one thing after another. Patrick went back to school today, but so far this evening has been punctuated with wails and trippy noses from Conor. It was bound to happen eventually!

Other than sickness, life has looked a bit like this the past few weeks:

1.I've been pretty busy with photo shoots the past few weeks, even managing 2 in the drizzle.

Img_6496_2

2. Star Wars has taken over our lives! All 6 episodes. And as a result, my knowledge of each episode is really rather amazing for a 36 year old! Look, there's even a tiny Lego Anakin Skywalker on the new unit!

Img_6786_post

3. The Ikea storage is finally here. Obviously it merits an entire post of its own, but for now a quick pic will have to suffice!

Img_6784_post

Img_6785_post

It truly is a thing of beauty!

4. Scrapbooking has happened! I know, some thought it never would again, but I love it. Just don't get enough time for it. But sickness has its upsides - lots of naps and lying around watching cbeebies. Perfect for mummy to do her thing for a bit.

Feeling rather proud of my creative achievements. Really loving the sense of satisfaction of cutting and sticking and pushing things round on the page and then ending up with a memory saved. I have much other rambling to share, but I shall leave that for another night. Back to work tomorrow, so I shall make a cup of tea and get me to bed.
